We get it - the number of buildings compared to the number of contractors in Valley County is pretty lopsided. You may have called a few local contractors and had to wait for them to bid your project for longer than you wanted. So, maybe, you called a contractor from Boise. There are thousands of Boise area contractors! Generally, they’re less expensive than the contractors in Valley County and, many times, they have more scheduling availability. This sounds perfect, right? Why wouldn’t you select one of these fine contractors?
Well, I would never say that out-of-town contractors are bad at what they do. However, the climate in Boise just isn’t the same as the climate in Valley County. When your primary residence or second home in Valley County is in the middle of trying to withstand a harsh winter, you need to be able to trust that your house is not in a position to be compromised. Many times, even the best contractors from out of the area don’t fully understand the severity that Valley County winters can bring. This can lead to seemingly small details that are left out or simply not even thought of because the contractor is used to working in areas where the weather is much milder.
Valley County contractors deal with home repairs and builds daily. They have seen what happens in this area when corners are cut and quality materials are skimped. It is extremely important that your building is constructed with high-quality components that are manufactured to weather extreme cold and heavy snow-fall. There is no substitute for excellence when it comes to those two factors. Your home or other building structure must be 100% able to handle a heavy snow load both in the wall structure and the roof system as well as provide adequate insulation from the extreme cold.
Knowing the correct materials to use is only “half the battle.” I would argue that the most important part of any construction project is correct installation experience. If a contractor regularly works out of the area, it is unlikely that they will be able to ensure top quality installation even if the materials used are correct. Realistically, the only way that you are guaranteed the best materials and installation procedures is by hiring a contractor who is both experienced in construction and experienced in Valley County or similar climate locations.
So, how do you know if the local contractor that you find does, in fact, meet those qualifications?
First, ask them. It’s simple to quiz your contractor on how long they’ve been in the area and how long they’ve been doing construction work. In addition, ask them about one specific installation procedure that relates to your project. By how thorough and informative their response is, you should be able to get a good idea as to how much they actually know about the project and the area.
Second, ask for references. Established contractors should have solid references for work that they have done in the past. If their projects have stood the test of time, it will be obvious in their reviews and references.
Third, do a little research of your own. The internet has plenty of resources for research. Look up your contractor’s social media pages, websites, or any other online presence that they may have. A quick google search can go a long way.
Finding a good contractor, in general, can be tough. Finding a good contractor in Valley County can, sometimes, be even tougher. However, if you commit to a little bit of additional research and make a few more phone calls, it will definitely be worth your while!
